Review of: V/A : The Hit Sounds of the Dub Pistols at Midnight

V/A: The Hit Sounds of the Dub Pistols at Midnight

Reviewed By: Daniel Cressey
Label: Roots Music
Format: CD

Barry Ashworth has taken time off from running the Dub Pistols to throw together this collection of gloriously sweet roots records release. The cumbersome album title references the fact that all the tracks here are drawn from U Brown’s ‘Hit Sound’ records or Jah Thomas’s ‘Midnight Rock’ label.

It’s one long shift of laid back baselines overlaid with snatches of piano, horns and vocals. George Nooks adds in a great reggae lovers number on ‘I’ve Got To Go’ laced between instrumental dub tracks and more dancehall-style numbers. Sugar Minott does a similar up-tempo job on the lovely ‘Steal Away Girl’.

Ashworth has done a truly sterling job on this compilation, which presents these great tracks in their entirety with (thankfully) no attempt to force them together into a mix.

Some of the artists here will be familiar to the casual reggae fan, but a higher number will inspire some searching through the archives to find more. Which is really the best compliment you can pay any compilation. Anyone with even a passing affection for reggae will find their summer soundtrack right here.

Eddy On Air

Eddy presents The Remix every Friday night from 10pm to 2am where you’ll find the very best mash-ups, cut-ups, bootlegs and unbelievably good dance music.

Dub Pistols Re-Hash album available now

The Rehash album sees a number of high-profile remixers tackle classic Dub Pistols tracks from their last three albums. Ex-Leftfield man Paul Daley has re-made the second album’s title track, lilting stone cold classic ‘Six Million Ways To Live’, into a new wave electroid roller. Other remixers on the project include Matthew ‘Bushwacka’ B, one half of the acclaimed Layo & Bushwacka duo, and Wrong Tom, who has just released an album of dubwise reworkings of Roots Manuva’s back catalogue, as well as underground DJ/producer hotshots such as Ben & Lex and Kouncil House.

Rehash will precede the release of the next full Dub Pistols album – our fifth – on Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label in April.

one of the choice cuts “Soulshakin” re hashed by Terry Hooligan and Filthy Habbit has gone straight in at Nos 1 in the Cool Cuts Buzz chart, Boom!

Beatcheck podcast 002 with Dub Pistols, Dubmatix and DJ Shift

It’s June, which means the festival season has already started – so we thought we would put together a podcast to get you into the outdoor spirit.

And what better way to do that than with an appearance from everyone’s favourite festival band, Dub Pistols. If there is a festival worth going to they would of either beat you to it and played it already, or you will be lucky enough to see them on stage. Playing more shows each year then is humanly possible, we love the Dub Pistols’ skanking hip hop beats. We hope that you do to.

We’ve also got some dub love from Canada’s Dubmatix, who opens up the podcast with his take on king of reggae Bob Marley’s This is Love before firing into his own unique blend of dub, reggae and electro.

And if that wasn’t enough, in the dance tent we present a tent-tearing, mud-stomping mini mix from local boys DJ Shift vs CB Radio. Their suitably named mix, Road Rave, is the Beatcheck residents’ second podcast outing and we couldn’t have asked for better.

Happy Skanking.
