Dub Pistols frontman Barry Ashworth will be returning to the Island next week to play a very special DJ set.

Barry will be providing the tunes for what is expected to be an unforgettable night of music at The Blacksheep Bar’s Christmas party on Friday 22nd December.

With a career spanning over 20 years, Ashworth has performed all around the world with the Dub Pistols, including slots at the Isle of Wight Festival, Bestival and Glastonbury.

The DJ set will follow the band’s winter UK tour.

Seventeen years ago, we invited some friends round for a few drinks and a singsong around a campfire. Since then we’ve invited thousands of you to Blissfields, opening our doors on two sites, enjoying groundbreaking performances, ridden hot air balloons, walked the trapeze, been in paint fights, dressed as animals, had tractor rides, travelled through time and put on the ultimate house party.
The time though has come to take a short break. In 2018 there won’t be a Blissfields; instead we’re taking it all back to our roots to begin a new event and a new journey together.

Dub Pistols Smash it at The Hub

Walking through Union Street down to The Hub on a Friday night, there was an unnaturally subdued atmosphere surrounding the clubs and bars, usually bustling with students and locals alike, looking worse for wear. However, these people seemed to have all converged at The Hub, where something different was in the air. After being swiftly being ushered in and having a quick beer at the bar before the support act, Kioko, took to the stage, the venue was filling up nicely. A vibrant mix of middle aged couples and their friends merging with students, who were also queuing up for a quick beverage, pleasantly laughing, yet eager to get the evening underway.

Soon after being treated to Birmingham boys Kioko, who got a fair few cutting some unorthodox shapes, it was time for the main act to rocket on to the stage. I mentioned in my preview for this show of the band’s ability to make everyone feel part of the show and this one was no different. In the short interludes between songs, frontman duo Seanie T and Barry Ashworth would rapidly shake many flailing arms to congratulate their audience for their unbalanced skanking. They even brought up on stage a ‘birthday girl’, and her friends, for the climax of the performance, ‘Mucky Weekend’, overwhelming the band in number as the brisk, snappy bassline kicked in. Hammering through songs like, ‘Alive’ and ‘Pistoleros’ caused a frenzy in the crowd, that inspired some of those at the back to charge forward and bop with the rest, in an effort to try to keep up with the rattling snare. As ‘Alive’ dropped in to its second chorus a few strangers even opted to do a can-can across the growing mosh pit. After paying homage to past albums, they introduced tracks from the new album including ‘Boom’, a thunderous number, memorable for its main hook, ‘BOOM!’. ‘London Town’ was totally different in pace and style yet equally as catchy, thanks to intricate brass sections and simple, yet a totally effective chorus structure.

Performing for over an hour and a half is not easy for any musician and some performances can tail off slightly. However, Barry Ashworth still attacks each song as if it were still the first minute of the show, throwing himself around the stage and pulling it off with a unique swagger. Before the show he told me, ‘We have so much Arsenal there to play with, we could play forever’, which is a true testament to the group’s hardworking, yet carefree attitude. Amidst all the busyness of the Crazy Diamond’s tour, which is now in full swing, Ashworth also said that he is ‘already halfway through writing the next record’, using this latest release, like many creative forces, to question where does he want to go next? Obviously, any new record is some way from being released, in the meantime, Ashworth has also joined the Blissfield’s festival team. This will be taking place in Winchester next July, a festival that prides itself on providing a form of escapism for its customers, not too dissimilar from a Dub Pistols show, where all of life’s problems seem to be forgotten.

The new record is called ‘Crazy Diamonds’, which is what this group are. Outrageous, wild, and far from sensible, just a few adjectives that could be used to describe either a Dub Pistols’ album or live show. Yet, within the madness lies a truly irreplaceable diverse sound, so distinctive and uncommon, like a rare jewel which should be treasured. Their documentary titled ‘What the Fuck Could Possibly Go Wrong?’, which has been filmed over the last five years, to be released soon, seems to be a reflective look back at the band’s highs and lows. Ashworth recognises this, ‘We’ve had so many ups and downs, over the years, probably more downs than ups… But we’ve probably moved past being the next big thing, now and have much more of a cult status.’ The documentary will hopefully show off to those, not yet familiar with the band, the fearless charisma that seems to encapsulate every member of the remarkable group and encourage them to catch a show, where it’s always a part

DUB PISTOLS took over The Hub in Plymouth to showcase material from their latest album CRAZY DIAMONDS, read our live review….
It’s been a while since we’ve covered Dub Pistols. I think it was Boardmasters in Newquay where we last caught up with Barry Ashworth and his merry men as they headlined the Land of the Saints stage, since then, we’ve seen Barry DJ a couple of times at other West country festivals but never as the whole band so when I got a call to ask if I wanted to cover their Plymouth show at the start of December, I was all over it like a rash.

A lot had happened since the last time we met, their eighth studio album Crazy Diamonds had landed and I for one was interested to see how many of the new offerings would be showcased at tonight’s show.

As we arrived at The Hub in the heart of Plymouth, we were immediately welcomed into the dressing room by a very ‘effervescent’ Barry Ashworth, drinks were offered and we chatted to the rest of the band about the tour so far and how the new material had been going down with the fans, Barry commented, “They love it, you never really know how the new stuff’s gonna be received but at the end of the day, you’re at a Dub Pistols show, it’s one big party and everyone’s out to have a great time”. We left them to their pre-show rituals (group hugs etc) and took up positions in the main room for the opening act that were just about to take to the stage.

Kioko are a Birmingham based 8 piece reggae band, the horn section were amazing, really lively, the backline were kicking out some proper bone-rattling bass and tight percussion, throw into the mix a couple of guitars and you’ve got the making of a great band who bring the party to wherever they happen to be playing!

The brass section were having an absolute blast, one acted as an MC, cajoling the crowd into an almost frenzied state when not tooting his trumpet! Their songs were upbeat and addictive, some carried a political undertone and one track was all about ‘the jungle’ in Calais, proving that these guys were not just a one trick pony. They really were a strong act, solid musicians through and through and are a great way to warm the crowd ready for Dub Pistols to take over!

After a brief intermission to change the stage around, it was time for the main act of the evening, the room soon filled as the beat kicked up and the guitar started to play. On walked Barry and Seanie T to a huge reception and launched straight into “Never Never”, lifted from the new Crazy Diamonds album.
Other new material to make the set list this evening included “Boom” and “Rising” which went down an absolute storm with the Plymouth capacity crowd. Now, if you don’t know, a Dub Pistols show IS a party, it’s a chance to get a few drinks down your neck and enjoy a night out on the town with Barry Ashworth and his crew providing the high velocity soundtrack that you just can’t help bobbing along to, hell, even I had a dance and that very rarely happens, I’m more the kind of person who stands at the side, nodding energetically but tonight, I decided I was going to get right on there and have a good old skank!

It was the age old favourites that kept the room on the boil throughout the evening, tracks such as “Real Gangsta”, “Gunshot” and their perfect renditions of cover versions such as The Stranglers’ “Peaches” and The Specials’ “Gangsters” proved that this bunch of hardy professionals knew their craft very well indeed as the night wore on
The finale was a wonderfully extended version of “Mucky Weekend” with Barry and Seanie T inviting a “Birthday Girl” onto the stage (accompanied by a bunch of her mates) to sing out the final track in time honoured tradition, it was indeed a mucky weekend by the time the band’s final chords rang out around the room.

What I love about Dub Pistols is the fact that they’re so happy to engage with their fans after the show, they could retire back to the dressing room until the fans disperse but no, you’ll see Barry hugging everyone, posing for photos and generally doing everything he can to ensure that EVERYONE has a great time, I think this is what brings people back to their shows time and time again.

They may be 8 albums into their career but I can honestly say that Crazy Diamonds is a polished release that stands up well with the more classic material that they have produced over the years, if its yet to make it into your collection, do yourself a favour, click the link below and get it ordered, give it to yourself as an early Christmas gift, you won’t be disappointed and as Santa will have come early, you can treat yourself again nearer the big day!

Lakefest, returns for a 7th year to Eastnor Castle, the former site of The Big Chill Festival, from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th August 2018.
