Addict album review from DJ mag

DUB PISTOLS
‘Addict’
(Sunday Best)
9/10
Get a fix
Dub Pistols albums have long been a riotous collision of breakbeat riddims, dubwise sensibility and a hearty-party attitude, but the addition of junglist producer King Yoof to work on their eighth album, ‘Addict’, has elevated the production up another level. It’s quite possibly the multi-racial collective’s strongest LP yet.
As usual, the list of collaborators is top-notch: Cheshire Cat delivers commanding vocals on the crisp ragga jungle title track and low-slung album closer ‘Soundboy’; scene stalwart MC Navigator duels with full Dubs band member Seanie T on conscious cut ‘Dark Days Dark Times’; the unstoppable Ragga Twins do the biz on a rollin’ ‘Two Generals’; and 2-Tone legend Rhoda Dakar guests on solidarity anthem and recent single ‘Stand Together’, which unwittingly caught the zeitgeist during the Black Lives Matter protests over the summer on release, and should’ve been massive.
But the Dubs can be equally adept at bringing through new talent, and the arrival of young reggae singer Natty Campbell on three tracks — horn-riddled dancehall missive ‘Camberwell Carrot’ and dubby ‘Wicked & Wild’, plus drum & bass outing ‘Sound Sweet’ — demonstrates that they’re always evolving and chasing new dreams. Now, if only there were some festivals to experience this fresh set of bangers at.
