DUB PISTOLS live @ the Jazz Cafe London, November 14th 2012

DUB PISTOLS (FULL LIVE SHOW) @ The Jazz Cafe, Nov 14 2012 7:00 pm

WORSHIPPING THE DOLLAR – The new Dub Pistols album Featuring Rodney P, Akala, Lindy Layton, Red Star Lion and more – OUT NOW!

The DUB PISTOLS infectious blend of ska, dub, hip-hop, electronic music and punk has won them many fans around the globe in the past 15 years, and at the end of 2011 — following sell-out shows in Spain, Italy and Greece — they were justifiably voted the Best Live Act at DJ Mag’s Best Of British Awards.  Now Dub Pistols are back with their fifth album in what’s shaping up to be their biggest year yet. 2012 began in style with a full-band show for 100,000 people in Wroclaw, Poland, broadcast live to two million viewers on Polish TV’s Channel 2. And now they’re releasing their fifth album, titled ‘Worshipping The Dollar’, on BBC Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank’s label Sunday Best Recordings this spring.

Between gigging every weekend since last acclaimed album ‘Rum & Coke’, Barry Ashworth and his crew have been creating a new long-player. ‘Worshipping The Dollar’ sees a return to lyrical themes similar to their earlier albums, with deeper and more conscious lyrics and a pacier feel to the tracks to mirror their increasingly frenetic live shows. “There are a lot more statement songs, there’s a lot of food for thought on this one,” says main man Barry Ashworth. “It’s more up-tempo, there’s some drum & bass on it, but the lyrics are deeper and darker. It’s more like our old stuff in a way.”

The title of the album is taken from a track voiced by Akala, Ms Dynamite’s brother. “Living in squalor, worshipping the dollar, there is no flag large enough to wrap around the horror” — so runs a key lyric on the anti-war song ‘West End Stories’, a scathing indictment of US imperialism. Elsewhere, other highlights include the return of UK hip-hop hero Rodney P, who has become part of the Dub Pistols extended family over the years. Rodney features on a couple of the album’s drum & bass tracks, the firing’ ‘Gunshot’ and the hilarious ‘Mucky Weekend’.  Also back following the successful reunion of his seminal ska band The Specials is long-term collaborator Terry Hall, who was absent from the last album due to touring commitments with the legendary Coventry band. Terry guests with regular Dubs MC TK on ‘Heroes’ as well as reprising ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ that he recorded with his post-Specials outfit Fun Boy Three back in the day.

Other guest vocalists include Lindy Layton, formerly of Norman Cook’s chart-topping Beats International project (guesting on ‘Rocksteady’ with Rodney P); reggae legends Red Star Lion (Barbados) and Dan Bowskill (London); plus regular Dubs MCs TK and Darrison.

Dub Pistols front man Barry Ashworth will warm you up with a range of delights. No he is not a AV DJ, but he does know a thing or two about rocking the crowd with a varied selection of music from the old to the new.

DJ Woody’s ‘Big Phat 90’s’ AV show is a nostalgic chronological musical ride through some of the decades dopest moments, taking in the likes of De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Naughty By Nature, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, Fugees, Dr Dre, Snoop Doggy Dogg and much more. DJ Woody reworks the classics with his unique blend of custom graphics, video sound bites and renowned turntable technique to rock the ‘slamminest’ 90’s house party since Kid n Play raised the roof.

Tom Central plays everything from classic boom-bap hip hop to modern bass-lead house, garage, drum n bass and beyond as well as his own productions and exclusive dubplates. Fuelled by a desire to add more to the Keep Up! experience and a commission from London promoters Soundcrash, Tom made the big switch to a full visual show over two years ago. Using 15+ years of club-based experience, Tom sets his music to visual content, mostly sourcing and editing all video content himself.

DUB PISTOLS TO HEADLINE “OFF THE TRACKS FESTIVAL”

Dub Pistols are today confirmed as the final headline act for Off The Tracks Summer Festival.

The London band will close the main stage on Saturday night, following their phenomenal show at Off The Tracks Spring Festival in May.

Festival director Andy Cooper says: “Dub Pistols’ performance in May was one of the most memorable we’ve ever had – more than two hours, with four encores. We thought long and hard about the Saturday night headline act for the Summer festival, but in the end there was no doubt and we’re proud to welcome them back.”

Dub Pistols’ founder Barry Ashworth says: “It’s fantastic to be invited back to headline Off The Tracks so soon. The response we got from the crowd at the May festival was off the scale and we’ve been buzzing about it ever since.”

Off The Tracks rounds off a busy summer for Dub Pistols, who are touring and playing festivals in support of their critically-acclaimed new album ‘Worshipping The Dollar’, released on Sunday Best Records.

Off The Tracks, celebrating its 24th anniversary in 2012, takes place at Park Farmhouse, Isley Walton, Derbyshire, from August 31-September 2.

Also on the bill are The Beat, Dodgy and Banco De Gaia, plus Rory McLeod and the Familiar Strangers, Edward II, Phantom Limb, The Lucky Strikes, The Beekeepers, Moon’shee and more.

Off The Tracks offers more than 40 artists on three stages, impromptu acoustic sessions as well as 80+ real ales, ciders and perries, excellent camping facilities and a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. Food on offer includes venison reared in the venue’s own historic deer park.

Advance weekend tickets are priced £70. Advance youth tickets are £40 (12-16 years old). Admission is free for under-12s. Tickets are available now from www.offthetracks.co.uk and all parking and camping is free for advance ticket holders.
