Vote for the AIM Best Live Act 2015 Now!

No surprises here – most of us live and breathe for live music, which is why we’re so excited to be hosting the AIM Best Live Act award again for 2015, in Association with Jack Daniel’s!

Each year, the AIM awards highlight the best and brightest independent artists who have toured in the last year, and we’re stoked that we have the opportunity to join in on the round of applause for all of them.

We spend a lot of our time outside the office at gigs big and small. It never gets old, don’t get us wrong, but it does mean that when we see an act that puts in a little something extra, we take notice. This year’s list features 56 incredible independent artists as the nominees for the Best Live Act of 2015. These are artists that have made us cry, scream, and dance till we’re drenched with their live show.

Now it’s your turn – you know that enthusiasm you’ve got when you’re trying to get an artist to come back out after their encore, in hopes that they might sing just one more song? Channel that feeling – and use it to digitally cheer them on with your vote!

Now in it’s fifth year, previous winners of the award include Enter Shikari, The Prodigy, Frank Turner and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. This year, the nominees include Future Islands (who will play their 1000th show next month), now-defunct The Knife (R.I.P.), and every music blog’s Best of 2014 favourites The War on Drugs and Run the Jewels, alongside 52 other outstanding acts.

Voting is open now, and runs through until the 29th June. The final nominees will be released in August, with the grand victors of this year’s Best Live Act in Association with Jack Daniel’s award announced at the AIM Awards ceremony in London on 8th September 2015.

Lemonfest Live review

So, it was time for the main act of the evening, we were fortunate enough to see Dub Pistols in Exeter in 2014 and they absolutely raised the roof back then, so how would they sound on an outdoor stage in what was looking like a very wet evening….well, read on to find out!

From the moment the lone trumpet player took to the stage to play the opening notes of their first track to the moment they took a bow and left the stage, they had the place bouncing, I don’t mean a couple of people bobbing their heads, I’m talking about the whole place jumping about! Dub Pistols are THE party band and if you have ever heard any of their material you’ll understand why, they rock! Effortlessly fusing Dub, Jungle, Hip Hop, Disco & Electronica they have been dazzling audiences all over the world for years. As well as being the driving force behind the band, Barry Ashworth is also a renowned DJ who has graced many turntables in countries such as Australia, Singapore, Serbia, Dubai, Thailand, Germany, Croatia, Italy and France. We chatted to Barry earlier in the day and I asked him what kept the band so tight and on form as every time we have seen them play, they look like they’re having a right royal knees up on the stage, he politely declined to answer the question, must just be a good heady dose of adrenalin, energy and the desire to give the crowd a kick ass show that they’ll be talking and reminiscing about for many months to come. Highlights for me included some of their legendary tracks such as ‘Mucky Weekend’, ‘Back to Daylight’ and a few lifted form their new album ‘Return of the Pistoleros’, released on June 1st which is available now as a signed CD or LP via Rob Da Bank’s label Sunday Best Recordings.

What started off as a project 18 years ago with various musicians jamming over the top of Barry’s output has slowly but very surely metamorphosed into a super tight, festival loving live machine that has fans the whole world over coming back for more year after year. They arrived, the played, they conquered, all hail Barry Ashworth and Seanie Tee and what is becoming one of the finest back lines of musicians in the industry, go forth and buy their new album, hell, buy all of their albums, they’re all brilliant and I bet you’ll be up and grooving to the output in no time at all! They left the rain soaked stage to rapturous applause and cheers, no doubt looking forward to playing more festivals throughout the land in the coming months….

London Dingwalls show Review

words Vidisha Vansal

Dub Pistols made London Camden Dingwalls dance crazily the whole night, as they kicked off their much awaited 2015 tour The Return of the Pisterols, performing a fusion of hip-hop, dub, ska, jungle set with some bonus reggae riffs thrown in. The big band on stage consisted of lead singer Barry Ashworth giving an energetic performance, along with the musicians, which included a very prominent performance from the trombones, giving the band a completely different, unique vibe than any other band currently touring. Even the man in the sombrero brought out to warm the crowd and take part in the performance added a unique spark to the band’s concert.

The Dub Pistols were surprisingly dance-floor friendly; something unexpected of music from live bands. The reggae riffs with the guitars and the tunes from the brass had the crowd grooving, with every person in Dingwalls dancing madly along to the music, proving the intense energy that Dub Pistols brought to their performance. The heavy bassline was reminiscent of the pure, live band music that is really what defines music in the first place, yet Dub Pistols successfully were combining this with their special, electronic dub feel (as hinted at by their name).

Dub Pistols are one of the true survivors of their genre, starting out in the 1990s yet still selling out nationwide tours, delivering what was expected of them and more. The crowd went crazy with each song, and was composed of evidently long-term and dedicated fans who were singing along word for word, tone for tone, going particularly wild for the closing jungle song “Mucky weekend,” chanting the lyrics “Oh no here we go again” with the song at top volume. Dub Pistols as well attracted a really young, fresh, crowd loving the ska musicality and dub beats, showing their fan-base to be ever-growing, appealing to a wide range of musical tastes.

The Dub Pistols caught its audience for the whole evening delivering a two hour set, with an only growing level of energy, leaving the audience buzzing and in love with the musicality and dance rhythms made from the ska, jungle songs about boozing, ecstasy, and all that illicit stuff, proving themselves to be one of the UK’s most unique bands.

Dub Pistols’ album The Return of the Pisterols will be released 1st June 2015, and is available for pre-order now!
