Gates open from 10am ’til Midnight – 11th June 2016

Arlebury Park, The Avenue, Alresford, Hampshire SO24 9EP (view map)

The Alresford Music Festival is a one day music event showcasing a diverse range of music styles from both established and emerging local talent.
Entering the 7th year of the Alresford Music Festival, work is on to create an event that takes this ‘community festival’ concept to another level.

First dreamed up in 2007 by Alresford resident Ken Veitch as an idea to raise money for local charities, the first Alresford Music Festival had been three years in the planning. Based on the concept of the 3 yearly Eric Clapton Crossroads Festivals benefiting good causes, Veitch thought the idea should be applied here in the UK, and here in Alresford. Teaming up with fellow musician Brian Hayward they researched how to make the dream a reality. Tapping into their local contacts, the festival slowly took shape and, with just a few weeks to go, the team had grown to include eight dedicated volunteers and numerous professionals and companies hired for the day.

A huge learning curve was embarked upon taking up many days, and nights, to get the event off the ground: despite the fastidious planning and research by Veitch, Hayward and the team, there were still some hurdles to climb, mainly finance! This led to a rocky period when it was touch and go whether the event would be viable. The first festival was saved when Alresford based IT company First Option (who were more accustomed to stepping in to rescue IT projects), came forward with a sponsorship deal for the event. After that, it was all hands on deck to finalise the details and to build more relationships with sponsors for this and future years.

Dub Pistols to headline Bearded Theory Festival

11755337_934342389978724_8562358269734336624_nDub Pistols have been confirmed as headline act on the opening day of Bearded Theory Festival 2016.

Bearded Theory is a multi-award winning creative and performing arts festival set in the beautiful grounds of Catton Hall in the heart of the National Forest. The festival borders 3 counties of West Midlands, South Derbyshire and Staffordshire and only 2 hours away for 50% of the UKs population.

In 2014 we won “Promoter of the Year” award at the UK Festival Awards in London and Festival Kidz “Silver Award”. In 2013, after being shortlisted for many years, we finally won “Best Small Festival” at the UK Festival Awards and a Festival Kidz “Gold Award”. In 2011 we won the “UKs Best Independent Festival” at the AIM Music Awards. Over the years we have also been shortlisted for many awards including Best Family Festival, Best Grassroots, and Best Toilets.

We have been recognised in the National press as being one of the best festivals of the summer in various articles in the Guardian, Express, Sun, Independent, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 1, Channel 4, BBC Entertainment and the Mirror. We have an award winning free Children’s Village along with an award winning bar selling real ales, lagers and ciders at pub tariffs. In addition we are one of the very few festivals that allow you to bring your own drink into our arenas.

In our history we have donated and generated over £180,000 for charity (Red Cross, Console, Oxfam, Lowry Foundation, Drop Inn & Shelter).

The festival has always been audience led and our programming is operated the same now as when we started 9 years ago. We book acts off the back of your recommendations, improved our infrastructure in line with feedback and sourced the vendors and bars off the back of the suggestions of people that attend.

The event takes place from 26th May till 29th May

Barry Ashworth & Howard Marks in Conversation

11538812-largeHoward Marks is still smiling – and he’s coming to Exeter Phoenix

He’s a man who needs no introduction – and Exeter audiences are being warned to “expect the unexpected” when Howard Marks appears at the Exeter Phoenix next week.

One-time drugs baron, and now renowned orator, Howard is facing perhaps his toughest challenge yet as he battles terminal cancer.

But he says: “I still believe in miracles, like any sexy thing.”

And as he refuses to let his illness get him down, he’s heading to the Phoenix for a special show in conversation with old friend Barry Ashworth of Dub Pistols fame.
Despite undergoing gruelling chemotherapy for bowel cancer, which has spread to other organs, Howard’s indomitable spirit is proving as strong as ever.

Revealing how he remains positive in the face of such a bleak prognosis, he said: “One doesn’t really start living until one knows one’s dying.”

And his latest ventures show how his illness is failing to stop him doing what he loves.

Since his diagnosis more than a year ago, not only has he defeated the doctors’ predictions of having just 10 months to live, the Mr Nice author has released a brand new book – Mr Smiley: My Last Pill and Testament – and has got back on the road with his latest tour.

Howard says his work has helped him to focus in the face of his illness.

“Such a focus has been more than essential,” he said. “Doing what I’ve always done is the best medicine.”

Howard, from Bridgend in Wales, has lived an incredible life, metamorphosing from notorious drug smuggler to national treasure.

He’s even had a film made of his life – with Rhys Ifans in the starring role.

And he says Exeter audiences can “expect the unexpected” as he chats to old drinking buddy Barry.

He said: “It would be difficult to rule out any raucous tales of misbehaviour or misdemeanour.

“But we are more than capable of making serious issues hilarious.

“Our partnership is of several years’ standing. It began when my promoter Biff Mitchell first tour managed the Dub Pistols at a venue in London – Brixton, if my memory serves me correctly, which it rarely does.

“I was invited to the gig and spent virtually the entire evening discussing all and everything with Barry.

“Although I’d met him a few times before, this was the first deep and meaningless conversation we had.

“We’ve had several since, but not in public. The people of Exeter can, of course, expect the unexpected.”

Howard is a regular name on the line-up for the Beautiful Days festival – held at Escot, near Ottery St Mary – and is looking forward to coming “home” for the Phoenix show, saying the county has a special place in his heart.

He said: “The people of Devon, with the possible exception of the Welsh, are the best in the world. My daughter, Myfanwy, has lived in Devon for several decades. In many ways, Devon is home for me.”

Arranging the tour has proved more difficult than usual because of his illness; his treatment schedule means shows can only be arranged three or four weeks in advance.

Howard has endured 30 sessions of chemotherapy – where most people go through between six and 10 – and although the cancer will not be beaten completely, the treatment is having a positive effect.

Howard said: “The tumours are shrinking, but there’s no chance of any remission.

“It’s a straightforward terminal disease.

“But I do believe in miracles, like any sexy thing.”

You can see Howard Marks in conversation with Barry Ashworth at the Exeter Phoenix on Wednesday, December 16, at 7.30pm.

Howard will be also showing one of his short films, taking a question and answer session, and holding a book signing at the end of the night

Tickets are £20 plus booking fee. Call 01392 667080 or visit exeterphoenix.org.uk

DUB PISTOLS HEADLINE SHINDIG WEEKENDER

12342716_535448016611795_2191923954323296556_nDub Pistols have been announced as next year’s headliners at the brilliant Shindig Weekender
Barry has been involved since the first year and has played twice as a dj alongside Rodney P, next year though the whole Dub Pistols band alongside some very special guests will make their debut at this unique festival.
Here is what Shindig had to say

‘When we tell people that Barry ‘Dub Pistols’ Ashworth is the Landlord in our festival pub we get some interesting reactions.

Well it’s simple, when it comes to Rock & Roll behaviour and instigating the party of the year we don’t know anyone who does it better. So after the last two years, its time to up the dosage. Barry is bringing the whole band with him this time plus some very special guests will be joining them on stage.

He will also be programming the now infamous Ashworth Arms line up for the whole of Sunday. We have seen what he has planned, the artists, the entertainment, the vibe… so come join Barry and the boys for the annual ‘drink the bar dry Sunday’ at Shindig.”
