a0015688519_2DJ Stix one of the original members of the Dub Pistols has released his fourth and FREE DOWNLOAD album “Waves”

Way back in 1997 through a mutual friend and Dub Pistols band member Jason O’Bryan, Stix met up with Barry Ashworth to do some scratching over a few of their songs for the Dub Pistols forth coming debut LP “Point Blank” 2 days later Stix was asked by Barry to come and play a show in Oslo Norway. This led onto long term touring of the world both as a DJ and band member performing at various venues, festivals, etc..

After all this time Stix still continues to meet up with Barry for the occasional show or scratch feature and in his spare time he still uses his abilities in the studio to produce hip hop beats hence the new 33 track LP.

“Waves” is all about digging the crates (real vinyl) so expect lots of static and quirky samples laced with some heavy kicks and snares and DJ Stix turntable skills to boot.

It is a free download so if you enjoy please share.

Dub Pistols Live in Brighton review

Dub Pistols, Concorde 2, Madeira Drive, Brighton, Friday, November 28

If these guys haven’t reinvented and reinvigorated ska, no one can.

Despite years of being at the forefront of beats culture The Dub Pistols still sounded as fresh and exciting as when they burst onto the scene back in 1996.

Their riotous blend of ska, dub, hip-hop, breakbeat, punk and drum & bass makes them a surefire festival favourite but happily the band’s unique sound translated just as well to the Concorde 2.

A strong electro /dance vibe dominated much of this extensive set on this their second last date of an extensive UK tour, and the result was an audience with more smiles than a Cheshire Cat convention.

10606268_10205510514028957_4467609331965178091_nExactly what element it was that made you want to grin inanely throughout an evening with Dub Pistols is difficult to pin down, but the combination of brass and electro and hip hop vocals created a joyful noise indeed.

Renderings of The Stranglers’ classic Peaches and Madness’s Night Boat To Cairo whipped the crowd into a frenzy early on and there was no let up in the energy stakes for the besuited and booted fellows on stage, with favourite track Cyclone just one of a myriad of songs belted out by the crowd as well as the band.

Some true hands in the air moments, some good natured riffing with the audience and a rousing encore ensured it was the perfect Friday night gig.

This was their ninth appearance in Brighton. May there be many more.
