Roots records kicks off a brand new series of releases with THE HIT SOUND OF THE DUB PISTOLS AT MIDNIGHT ROCK… We’re asking a whole host of DJs to trawl through their old dub and early dancehall sevens, pre’s and 12’s to come up with a truly personal musical journey taken from the archives of the Midnight Rock and Hit Sound catalogues – and kicking us off is the legendary BARRY ASHWORTH from Sunday Best’s party stalwarts and festival favourites The Dub Pistols…
Barry Ashworth, like so many Londoners, can trace his love of roots and dancehall reggae back to the heady days of punk rock when the music got its first ‘overground’ exposure alongside the punk and new wave bands who played at clubs like the Roxy and The Electric Ballroom…DJ’s like Don Letts mixed up the music between sets and introduced a healthy dose of bass heavy and often Deejay led classics from a whole variety of Jamaican legends…Barry takes up the story…”As a kid I was always hanging around Portobello Road in the west and Pettycoat Lane in the east on a weekend…not only could you hear reggae blasting out of shops and bedroom windows but you could also buy it…west London for the heavy roots sound and over in Brick Lane you could pick up ska and rocksteady for peanuts…The music became the major influence on me and when the time came for me to get together with Jason O’Bryan to form the Dub Pistols, it was obvious that we were going to look to reggae for an influence”.
Taking their cue from the Big Beat boom of the mid 90’s, the Dub Pistols soon got a reputation for being more daring and innovative and threw elements of reggae into the mix. Recording sessions with the like of The Specials’ Terry Hall, Horace Andy and the now sadly departed legendary Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaacs himself only enhanced their reputation. Last year the band’s fourth album Rum And Coke was released to both critical and commercial acclaim.
Ashworth says…”I loved the opportunity to go back through some of those early, pre-digital dancehall classics and throw so many of them together on this album – I’m a massive fan of Jah Thomas and it was a great opportunity to listen to so much of his work and fashion it into an album…Can I do a volume two?”

Check out Dub Pistols On A Breaks Mission & Mash Up Mix Vol’s 2, Dub Pistol Barry Ashworth serves up another Double Header of all manner of Big Bass, Dub, Breaks, Steppin Grooves, Killer Hip Hop, Nu Funk Mash Up’s and Edits for this coming Summer Festival Season, Once again Both Mixes Deliver just what’s required for those Heady Sunny Summer Days Jumping Around in Fields without a care in the world, Barry Ashworth is a proper legend and judging by the tunes he has armed himself with the Festival Season and Upcoming Club nights are gonna be going right off, Big Tings For 2011 !!!

Win tickets to 2011’s Beat-Herder music festival happening in The Ribble Valley, Lancashire from 1st-3rd July with Leftfield, Simian, We Have Band, The Dub Pistols and more.
Once upon a time there were the Toil Trees, where many danced to the music of the Toil Soundsystem. The landowner was due to cut down the forest, but chancing upon the event – enjoyed himself so much that the Beat-Herder event was born. There is a stage tucked away under the trees – follow the sound of the dancing! This family-friendly event boasts a Kids field, but a nonetheless party-mad crowd. It was recently runner-up in the Best Dance Event category at the 2011 UK Festival Awards.
The Line-up? Leftfield and Simian Mobile Disco and let’s not forget about Mr Scruff, We Have Band and the legendary ex-Special Neville Staples. Boy 8-bit, the Dub Pistols and Utah Saints are more jewels in an already stellar line-up.

The Dub Pistols emerged from the big beat scene after forming in 1996. Previously, Barry Ashworth had been in Bealearic band Déjà vu before becoming a DJ, and he’s continued to DJ all over the world when not rocking out live with the full Dub Pistols band.
In the early noughties he started the short-lived Ugly Records, and then in the mid-noughties got together with Carl Loben to form Westway Records. Named partly in homage to The Clash (whose ‘Westway To The World’ film was named after the iconic west London flyover), ‘Westway’ was also the name of an early Dub Pistols release. The mission statement from the beginning was to release quality underground dance music with attitude, achieved via a punk-infused DiY ethic.
“It’s important to keep feeding good music back into the scene,” says Barry, and Westway has done just that. Barry has fed productions by his side-projects – Dogtown Clash and Rumblefish – through Westway, including ska-dub-breakbeat opus ‘West London’s Burning’ which has since been co-opted into the Dub Pistols live set. The Japanese Samurai video for this was on rotation on MTV and played several times by Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 1, and Westway have had a number of other notable successes, including being nominated in the Best Label category at the 2010 Breakspoll awards.
The main thing, though, has been releasing quality club tracks, and Westway has given an early break to a number of artists who have since gone onto bigger things. A couple of early Westway releases were by Italian DJ/producer Madox, now one of the biggest names in house music as Riva Starr. Through his worldwide travels, Barry has brought several other new acts into the Westway extended international family, including Access Denied from Belarus, Sangers & ra from Australia, and Boogie Army from Germany – whose Marten Hörger is now one-half of the Smash Hi-Fi project with Leeroy Thornhill (ex-Prodigy).
Westway has also released tracks by Cut La Roc, the Drum Monkeys, D-Funk (Now Upstart Records), Myagi from Canada, Liverpool electro-rockers Killaflaw, B-Phreak from Germany, Moriarty (now NiteNoise), DJ Prosper from France, the Velours Brothers and more.
In addition, Westway has enlisted remixes from a host of quality names, including Dreadzone, Utah Saints, Lo-Fi Allstars, Beat Assassins, Plaza De Funk, Kouncilhouse, 601, Nils Jumpen, Misk, Eddy TM’s Losers, hardcore legend Zero B, dubstepper Mskr-nt, Klaus Heavyweight Hill, and electro anarchist IDC.
Supporters of Westway releases have included: the Crystal Method, Krafty Kuts, D.Ramirez, Stanton Warriors, Gabriel & Dresden, Eddy Temple-Morris (Xfm), Annie Nightingale (BBC Radio 1), Jay Cunning, Terry Hooligan, Pete Jordan, Lady Waks, Laurent Garnier and many more…
